California auto claims and remote estimating

Request estimating support in California

Request damage estimating, supplements or desk review for an assignment in California. We confirm scope, evidence, applicable eligibility and remote suitability before acceptance. Field attendance requires separate confirmation.

California repair-shop choice and parts documentation

California Department of Insurance guidance explains that an insurer cannot require a particular auto repair shop under Insurance Code section 758.5. The guide also discusses the conditions for insurer shop recommendations and reasonable repair costs. Choosing a shop does not settle every disagreement about the repair scope or policy coverage.

The Department says non-original replacement parts must meet the required comparability standards. When reviewing an estimate, identify the proposed part type instead of treating every replacement line as a new OEM part. Keep the estimate, relevant part information and any documented fit or performance concern together. These records make the actual estimating question clearer without assuming that one part category is automatically owed.

A supplement is not repair authorization

The Bureau of Automotive Repair explains that customers must authorize repairs before the shop starts work and authorize additional repairs when changes are needed. A remote estimating request or a revised estimate is not a substitute for that authorization. Keep the customer's authorization record separate from the documents submitted for insurer review.

For California automotive repair dealers, BAR's Write It Right guide covers estimates, invoices and documentation. Its specialized-estimate guidance addresses a teardown estimate before diagnostic disassembly. If hidden damage is suspected, the inquiry should describe the evidence already available and what remains unverified; it should not direct a shop to dismantle a vehicle without its required process.

Where California insurance and repair questions belong

For questions about an insurer or claim handling, California Department of Insurance's Getting Help page provides consumer assistance and complaint routes. For an unresolved problem with an auto repair shop, BAR explains its separate mediation and complaint process. An estimate disagreement, an insurance complaint and a workmanship complaint are not interchangeable.

BAR specifically lists boat or watercraft repairs, heavy-duty commercial vehicle repairs and trailer repairs among matters outside its complaint authority. Do not apply a passenger-auto resource indiscriminately to a tractor-trailer, marine or equipment assignment. Identify the asset and issue first, then use the appropriate official guidance. California United Appraisals is not either regulator and cannot promise a complaint result.

Choose the service and evidence for your asset

Send unit identification, current location, damage photographs and the requested scope. Supplements need the baseline estimate and evidence for added operations; desk review needs specific questions.

Heavy trucks, trailers, agricultural or construction equipment, ATVs, boats and aircraft require asset-specific scope and fee confirmation. Auto rules do not automatically govern these assets. Estimating is not a safety, seaworthiness or airworthiness certification.

Estimating, policy appraisal and property valuation are distinct

A damage estimate does not appoint an appraisal-clause appraiser, umpire or adjuster. These roles have separate requirements. We do not decide coverage or guarantee payment.

Home and mortgage valuations require separate credentials, lender ordering and any applicable appraisal-management compliance. This page does not confirm an available real estate provider network.

Southern California inspection inquiries

For a vehicle currently in Los Angeles, Orange or Ventura County, use the relevant local page to describe access and the requested field work. Availability and acceptance still require confirmation. Remote requests elsewhere in California are assessed on the evidence and scope.
