Repair estimates and hidden damage in Maine
Maine’s Bureau of Insurance explains that you may select your repair shop, although choosing a more expensive facility can leave a price difference to resolve. A shop’s discovery of additional collision damage is a reason to document a supplement and seek insurer review, not proof that every added charge is covered.
For an estimate review, retain the original estimate, teardown photographs, parts identification and the shop’s explanation of newly discovered damage. Distinguish a proposed repair scope from authorization to perform the repair.
When a policy appraisal clause may help
The Bureau describes appraisal as an amount-of-loss process generally found in personal auto policies. It concerns a claim with your own insurer, not a right to invoke your policy against someone else’s insurer. Read the actual clause before retaining an appraiser.
Each side generally selects and pays its appraiser; an umpire may be needed if they disagree. A repair-cost estimate alone does not invoke this process. For a value dispute, collect comparable vehicles and evidence of mileage, options and pre-loss condition.
Choose the service and evidence for your asset
Send unit identification, current location, damage photographs and the requested scope. Supplements need the baseline estimate and evidence for added operations; desk review needs specific questions.
Heavy trucks, trailers, agricultural or construction equipment, ATVs, boats and aircraft require asset-specific scope and fee confirmation. Auto rules do not automatically govern these assets. Estimating is not a safety, seaworthiness or airworthiness certification.
Estimating, policy appraisal and property valuation are distinct
A damage estimate does not appoint an appraisal-clause appraiser, umpire or adjuster. These roles have separate requirements. We do not decide coverage or guarantee payment.
Home and mortgage valuations require separate credentials, lender ordering and any applicable appraisal-management compliance. This page does not confirm an available real estate provider network.
