Check the 2026 appraisal requirement

The Appraisal section of TDI’s July 20, 2026 disaster-guidance bulletin explains that Insurance Code Chapter 1813 requires an appraisal provision in personal automobile policies issued or renewed after January 1, 2026. The process addresses a disagreement over the amount of loss between the policyholder and insurer. Read the applicable policy and law rather than relying on older guidance that treats appraisal as entirely optional.

Separate valuation from coverage and complaints

TDI explains that appraisal determines the damage amount, not whether the policy covers it. Its consumer complaint guide advises checking policy deadlines and explains that each side usually pays its own appraiser and shares umpire costs. TDI cannot help with complaints against another person’s insurer or force a payment that is not required by law or the policy. Supporting repair estimates should first be provided to your insurer.

Choose the service and evidence for your asset

Send unit identification, current location, damage photographs and the requested scope. Supplements need the baseline estimate and evidence for added operations; desk review needs specific questions.

Heavy trucks, trailers, agricultural or construction equipment, ATVs, boats and aircraft require asset-specific scope and fee confirmation. Auto rules do not automatically govern these assets. Estimating is not a safety, seaworthiness or airworthiness certification.

Estimating, policy appraisal and property valuation are distinct

A damage estimate does not appoint an appraisal-clause appraiser, umpire or adjuster. These roles have separate requirements. We do not decide coverage or guarantee payment.

Home and mortgage valuations require separate credentials, lender ordering and any applicable appraisal-management compliance. This page does not confirm an available real estate provider network.
